Rome Art Program not only focuses on the ancient. As part of their study this summer, the students visited EUR, the residential and business district of Rome with Artist and Critic Serafino Amato.
Located in the south of the city, EUR (Esposizione Universale Roma) was an area originally chosen in the 1930’s as a site for the 1942 World Fair which Benito Mussolini planned to open to commemorate twenty yeas of fascism.
Designed under the direction of Marcello Picacentini, the district was inspired by Roman Imperial town planning combined with Italian Rationalism.
Due to the Italy’s involvement in the Second World War, the World Fair never took place.
During their visit the students made a short film based on their travels into EUR and the development of the city. The film is entitled A Losing Memory of Space in EUR Roma.
The film is a collaborative effort from the students and was edited and directed by student Brian Strigel.
